Day Trip to St Michaels Winery

We've stocked wines from St Michaels winery in St Michaels, Maryland for a couple of years but had never been there.  They have a brand new tasting room and yesterday was the perfect day for a visit.

We started with a drive through beautiful Easton,on our way to Oxford, another charming bayfront town.  There we drove onto the Oxford Bellevue Ferry for a 3/4 mile crossing of the Tred Avon River.  The Oxford Bellevue Ferry is believed to be the oldest privately operated ferry service in the nation, having operated intermittently since 1683.  From Bellevue, it is a scenic 7 mile drive into St Michaels.

St Michaels is a delightful town with great restaurants, loads of unique boutiques, a lighthouse tour, sailing opportunities, a maritime museum and of course, St Michaels Winery tasting room.

The tasting room was packed with visitors but the staff was very capable and made sure that everyone was able to sample some great wines.  The winery offers 4 different tastings: a white wine flight, a red lovers run, a sweet wine flight and the staff favorite flight.  I tasted the red lovers run and Tom tried the white wine flight.  We revisited some of our favorites (Island Belle Sangiovese and Long Splice White) and were really impressed with the new Sauvignon Blanc and unoaked Chardonnay, both of which we will be stocking in May.  Lovely, crisp wines that are perfect for summer.

For the beer lovers in your group, the wine tasting room is next door to the Eastern Shore Brewing Company, a microbrewery which also offers tastes.

All in all, a lovely day trip to one of the Chesapeake Wine Trails wineries, although there is so much to do in the St Michaels area that we could easily have stayed longer.
